Our story

Karabatak opened in June 2011 in Karaköy, the old Galata, where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus. The building had been an abandoned metal workshop and spare parts shop, two storeys and about 800 square metres, and the work to bring it back to life began in 2010.

The cormorant is Istanbul's bird. You see them on the buoys and diving into the Bosphorus for fish, and karabatak is its Turkish name. Since Karaköy there has been Sunday Coffee Bar in Teşvikiye and Karabatak Aspat in Bodrum, and now a house on Richmond Road, where Orpheus Taverna stood for forty years.
